TrustedOpinion Banks $1.3 Million Series A

by Brian Solis on October 24, 2007

Trusted Opinion announced that it has raised $1.3 million Series A financing led by two private investors. TrustedOpinion.com drives consumer confidence by creating reliable, personalized recommendations based on the opinions of your network of friends.

Proceeds from the funding will accelerate Trusted Opinion’s impressive growth. Since the official launch of its beta site in February 2007, the company has developed a strong following — with more than 350,000 registered members and over 3,000 new members added each day. The site is currently focused on movies and television series and will introduce new categories in the near future.

According to TechCrunch, the company recently added support for Netflix queuing in July, allowing members to port recommendations into Netflix. Very clever…
So what does Trusted Opinion do?

To start, it’s an online community that brings together friends around movies and television programs and allows them to discover and share information around the content that’s specific to them.

The company recognizes that opinions of one’s friends are more meaningful of those of a stranger. By weighing the opinions of people in one’s social network highest, TrustedOpinion.com members experience higher quality and more relevant recommendations. A key point is that recommendations are unique to each user.

Unlike other sites that provide ratings based on the average opinion of everyone on a site, Trusted Opinion’s recommendation algorithm places greater value on the opinions of friends, and friends of friends, up to three degrees.

When members log into TrustedOpinion.com, they can access top-rated theatrical releases and DVDs ranked based on the opinions of their circle of friends. Personalized movie scores are displayed, along with a visually rich, 3-D Ratings Radar™ that displays a member’s circle of friends and their individual ratings for the film. The Ratings Radar is also used to explore friends’ recent activity and discover and meet new people who share the same tastes.
