Picture 2Clearspring, the widget creator, has a major update to its platform being rolled out today. It’s AddThis component, having been integrated into Clearspring’s’ company last year when it was acquired, is taking on a larger role within the Clearspring offering.

AddThis, which began as a sharing mechanism for web links, has shown significant promise since being incorporated into Clearspring’s overall product. With the Clearspring Launchpad for widget-sharing and AddThis for web page sharing, Clearspring had its bases covered. The updated integration, however, gives even more sharing capabilities to AddThis. It’s platform will now include web link sharing as well as embeddable widget sharing, eventually phasing out the Launchpad services all together.

What Clearpsirng is doing with this update is adapting to the changing environment of content sharing. While we spent nearly a decade creating hubs for aggregated content on the web, building up destination sites eventually led to the breaking apart of content for portability and easier consumption.

At this point, web content is so broken down that we have to aggregate it yet again in a more customizable format. This necessity of shaping the web to our individual needs is a promising opportunity for AddThis. Combined wtih Clearspring’s existing reach, the two platforms reportedly reach nearly 600 million monthly web users across the globe.

The desire to become the leading platform for sharing content means that Clearspring has to continue to put itself in an accessible position for publishers and end users. Appealing to publishers is still a major aspect of Clearspring’s strategy moving forward, as it hopes to implement its AddThis platform by encouraging placement on various websites.

Additional upgrades to the AddThis service include a more personalized series of features, including a custom view of an end user’s sharing options based on their region and previous web behavior. What this does is further tailor the web on an individual level, creating more value for AddThis as a socially aware sharing tool.

This also brings up increased capabilities Clearspring can offer around its analytics. Clearspring’s ability to collect behavioral data around web content sharing combined with data on widget interactivity gives the company a large pool of information to work with. Comparatively, this is useful to publishers and marketers, as they seek the analytics to support and justify their social media marketing campaigns.

At any rate, the future of Clearspring looks bright. Working behind the sense and gaining a greater understanding of how the web works will give the company an advantage when it’s ready to move deeper into analytics. Becoming another hub for shared communication on a global scale is something other social platforms, including Twitter and Facebook, are moving towards. Finding a way to be among the first to market for such a large undertaking will ultimately benefit Clearspring and its end goals.

Here in Cincinnati we’ve still got at least one start-up that’s going full-steam ahead, with multiple offices and new features. It’s rather encouraging, to tell you the truth. Today, ShareThis announced the beta launch of a new widget. (When did widget come to mean more than a vague example in business class?  I digress.)

You can find a live version of the new widget on sites such as FoxNews.com, AccessHollywood.com, SparkPeople.com (also Cincinnati, by the way), and Boston.com, and it will be rolled out to everyone else who uses it – over 80,000 sites – in the next few weeks.

So, what’s new? Well, the new widget features the following:

  • The abillity to share to their Sharebox (located on the ShareThis site) directly through the widget.
  • Access to a contact manager, with (of course) the ability to import from all the big webmail sites. The widget also remembers the last three email addresses to which you shared, making sharing faster.
  • The widget is prettier now, and easier to use. Tabs are completely gone and a more ribbon-y effect is used. I saw this demo’d back in the fall, and it really is a great improvement.

According to Tim Schigel, CEO, “More than ever before, people are relying on their personal networks to exchange information that is of interest to them and this new widget will help shape the next generation of sharing.”

The launch of the new widget follows the recent unveiling of ShareThis’s revamped web site that includes extensive instructional content on how to optimize ShareThis, whether you’re a publisher or a user.

Cerado, a provider of mobile and web-based software and services, has announced the availability of Cerado Ventana, which brings brands directly to your customers. The system addresses the five aspects of business relationships from the customer’s point of view: research, purchase, support, connection and conversation.

Cerado Ventana enables organizations to engage with customers and community members in spaces that are often out of reach, such as blogs, personal start pages, and cell phones. Once connected, customers gain immediate access to news, products, services, and community features. Cerado Ventana is available immediately, and can be deployed as both a mobile-based app (e.g. for iPhones and BlackBerries) as well as a blog widget. It can also be deployed on personal start pages, such as an iGoogle page.

“In developing Cerado Ventana, we’ve included customers in the creative process from day one,” said Christopher Carfi, CEO of Cerado. “This means that, although the product and platform express significant innovation, every feature included has been implemented as a result of a customer request. It’s been a great balance between pushing the envelope and delivering pragmatic value.”

PhotoJoy is a free application that lets you easily create all sorts of toys with your photos. You can create desktop widgets (toys), 3D photo screensavers, wallpaper collages.

Their theory is that we take the photos, store them in an archive somewhere or upload them to Flickr, and then never look at them. Photojoy figures you should, well, enjoy them.

Uploading your photos to PhotoJoy quick and simple, and it even works with your Flickr account. You can choose to upload photos saved on your computer or any photos from your Flickr account. In addition, PhotoJoy also offers a Web streaming option that automatically updates your PhotoToys, screensavers and wallpaper collages with new photos from Flickr as soon as they become available.

Did I mention the software was free? For an example of what you can do with PhotoJoy, here’s a great video they made featuring our own Brian Solis. And Brian, this is exactly what you get for having your photos all over the Internet. ;-)
