by Brian Solis on April 1, 2009

by Rebecca Reeve

The 3rd annual Web 2.0 Expo kicking off yesterday in San Francisco, Tuesday, March 31 – Friday, April 3, with the tag line “The Power of Less.”

In an time constrained by the economy and tighten budgets it’s more important than ever to look at the fundamental Web 2.0 technologies that can create the advantages that will help us move forward stronger than ever.

This year’s main focus areas are:
* Strategy & Business Models
* Marketing & Community
* Design & User Experience
* Fundamentals
* Development

The main focus areas are complemented by five mini focus tracks:
* Web Operations
* Mobile
* Security
* Web 2.0 at Work
* Government 2.0

Reflecting the expo theme of “The power of less” and increased attention to ROI, it’s interesting to note that the marketing and community track is heavily focused on measurement and ROI this year.

Free Expo passes available when you register for a hall pass at here using the code: EXPOPASS.

The Web 2.0 Expo brings together an eclectic group of leaders in the web space, and as always this event is equally about the connections made in the evening over drinks at the parties. Below are a list of a few of the evening events we’ll be attending:

The TechSet and Windows Mobile hosted very special event at the classic Belmont Lounge on Friday March 13th during SXSW Interactive 2009.

Guests relived the unique and stylish genre that conjured scenes from Las Vegas and Palm Springs during the Sinatra era. We were surrounded by incredible and pioneering entrepreneurs and influencers as we created our own Rat Pack rich with relationships that will propel us long after the curtain closed on SXSW.

In the end, 1,015 guests helped create one of the most exciting after dark events during SXSW.

Stephanie Agresta, the team at Windows Mobile, and I thank you for spending part of your evening with us!

Dave Morin, Sarah Lacy, and I co-hosted the West Coast leg of Julia & Randi’s Bi-Coastal Birthday Bash last night at Rosewood in San Francisco.

Julia & Randi are celebrating their birthdays with us on both coasts this weekend, San Francisco (Fri, Feb 27) and New York City (Sat, Feb 28) in an effort to raise awareness and donations for Charity: Water and Women for Women International. The theme honored the charities by promoting the colors that uniquely represented them, blue and pink. It created a wonderful ambiance of continuously shifting fashionable decor, which complemented the intimate mood set by the Rosewood’s stylish motif.

Julia and Randi, you are amazing and wonderful. I can’t express that enough. Thank you for always being there…And, thank you for sharing your special day with us and also for raising awareness of two very important causes. Happy Birthday!

I’ll let the pictures tell the rest of the story…

More about Charity: Water

Charity: Water is a non-profit bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Right now, over 1 billion people on the planet don’t have access to safe, clean drinking water. Charity: water funds sustainable clean water solutions in areas of greatest need. Just $20 can give one person in a developing nation clean water for 20 years.

MyOpenBar.com: Need I say more?

by Michelle Lentz on January 8, 2009

by Michelle Lentz

So the economy is tight and my Recession Wine series over on my wine blog just isn’t doing it for you. You need some real alcohol – for free. I firmly believe the economy will drive most of us to drink, sooner or later.

The solution is here – at least, it is if you live in New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, Honolulu, or San Francisco. Myopenbar.com is a site that is tracking events with open bars in your specified city. If your city isn’t there yet, such as Cincinnati, you can fill out a form and cross your fingers you’re not the only one requesting it.

In order to get all this free alcohol, you’ll have to deal with theatre openings, art galleries, receptions, and other things. Is it worth it? You choose. In some cases it might be a one price, all you can eat and drink deal, in other cases, it’s low prices – such as 80 cent cosmos. Most of the time, however, it seems to be free drinks.

I am in no way advocating that you go out and get yourself hammered. However, some of these might be neat occasions to meet other folks. The alcohol just makes the meeting easier.
