Startup funding is a major concern for many entrepreneurs, so it’s always a welcome relief to learn of organizations that are still ready, willing and able to help out on the monetary front. Chicago-based group ScaleWell is currently accepting applications for their first installment of their grant program, rewarding $1000, two months of work space in downtown Chicago, and mentorship from local vets in the startup business.

Several trustees in Chicago have donated to the program, acting as caretakers towards the preservation of Chicago’s innovative startup scene for technology. One such trustee, Sean Corbett, is a graduate of TechStars Boston, having experienced this type of environment designed in helping an entrepreneur grow his idea and business. Read below for more details, and click here to apply.

ScaleWell was created to assist Chicago’s startup scene – a community without a dedicated early-stage funding program like the YCombinator and TechStar-esque programs supporting other non-coastal cities like Boulder, Austin, Atlanta, and Philadelphia. Trustee Sean Corbett – a graduate of TechStars Boston and Chicago resident – expressed the importance of support for small ventures: “Mentors from the TechStars program provided invaluable insight and I hope ScaleWell can provided a similar resource for Chicago companies.” ScaleWell also hopes the simple act of consistently recognizing and cultivating innovative ideas in Chicago should encourage more potential entrepreneurs to explore starting new ventures.

Everyone! (click the image to tag & add a note to your pic and those you know)

Kristen Nicole and I organized a last-minute Chicago Tweetup at Crimson in the Hotel Sax to celebrate the emerging tech sector in Chicago. I was in town to speak at the Chicago Community Trust event, The New Media Revolution: How Arts Organizations Can Thrive in the Digital Age. I was overwhelmed by the amazing people who showed up and shared their time and stories with everyone.

Thank you to Kristen for bringing everyone together. And, thank you to Emile Cambry for helping me with everything once I landed in Chicago.

I’llĀ  let the pictures tell the rest of the story…

The one and only Kristen Nicole

Francine McKenna, Liz Strauss, Barbara Rozgonyi

Blagica Stefanovski Bottigliero

Brian Solis is keynoting a free event tomorrow in Chicago. The New Media Revolution: How Arts Organizations Can Thrive in the Digital Age is presented tomorrow from 8:45 am to 12:15 pm by the Chicago Community Trust. The half-day event features experts with relevant experience who can help guide your arts (or non-profit) through the sometimes intimidating world of social media.

The event is rather jam-packed, including Brian’s keynote, 2 panels of some rather well-known Web 2.0 names/organizations, and a closing session with Kara Walsh, CEO of Metromix, on how newspapers are entering the digital age. (I’d love to hear that. Our local Cincinnati paper is having problems entering the digital age.)

The event is free and is taking place at the Chicago Cultural Center on Randolph Street. Registration is limited to two registrants per organization. No registrants will be accepted day-of, so sign up now if you’re in Chicago.

And don’t forget, you can join the Tweetup tonight at Crimson Lounge and meet a lot of the folks who’ll be in attendance at the seminar.

There’s a tweetup tonight in Chicago. Brian Solis, Kristin Nicole, and Jim Figliulo are hosting a tweetup to celebrate Jim’s birthday.

The tweetup will be held at the Crimson Lounge at 333 N Dearborn Street in downtown Chicago. Whether you’re in town for an event or local, this is a great way to meet some folks (um, tweeple?) from all over. (The next day, many are attending the free Chicago Community Trust event: “The New Media Revolution: How Arts Organizations Can Thrive in the Digital Age.” I’ll have a whole separate blog post on that coming up.)

You can see more information on the tweetup Facebook event page.
