On a recent episode of my favorite guilty pleasure, What Not to Wear, makeup artist Carmindy recommended sugar as a daily facial scrub. Yes, the kind often used to stabilize rocky tables. So, I decided to try it out and compare it to some other facial scrubs – one drug store brand and one higher-end scrub. Let the games begin!

sugar

C&H Pure Cane Sugar

Price: Cheap

Trial: First up is sugar. This is the brand we have for coffee, etc. so I went with that. On the show, she just added a little bit of water to make it into more of a paste and voila! I used about half of a packet for my whole face and I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised. It was grittier than I realized, which I prefer – a scrub should scrub in my opinion. It left my skin incredibly soft and fresh feeling. The only downside for me is that it’s totally fragrance free, but if you get a little in your mouth it certainly doesn’t taste like a normal scrub or face wash.

apricot-scrub-invigorating

St. Ives Apricot Scrub

Price: Typically $4-$5

Trial: Although I do appreciate the new packaging, I’m not a huge fan of this scrub. I actually prefer it as a body scrub. It does the trick and leaves skin feeling pretty smooth, but it’s missing that “wow” factor for me.
Exfoliate

C.O. Bigelow Brown Sugar Crystal Face Polish

Price: $19.50

Trial: This scrub has the best scent by far, which I think is partially because of the strawberry seeds (0.03%). I would recommend it if you have dry skin as it has a thicker consistency and can also be used as a mask. The exfoliants/granules are not always perfectly round though and can feel a bit sharp on the face, but it’s very soothing overall.

Now, drumroll please…the winner is…sugar! I was a little shocked by my decision since I’m usually drawn towards fancy packaging, but for the price and results, I don’t think it can be beat. So go ahead and ask your neighbor for a cup – just don’t tell them what it’s for. :)

Coveted1Strolling along South Park in San Francisco one day on my lunch break, I ducked into a small coffee shop for a quick breather before heading into Jeremy’s on the corner to check out any new goodies they have in stock. I got my coffee, walked over to add some sugar, and then my hand hit a stack of those post cards that are left randomly all over the place. Normally, I’d just walk away, but this one was so pretty, antique floral looking, with pink roses and blue lace background. All it said was ‘Thecoveted’. I had no clue what it was, but I took one, stuffed it away in my ‘Mary Poppins bag’ (as all my friends call it) and left the shop.coveted3

A few weeks later, I was rummaging for an old receipt, and found the cute postcard, went to my computer and typed in ‘thecoveted’ and anxiously awaited what was to show up. There in front of me, was my new favorite, obsessive, ‘must read’ fashion blog that I have not missed one day of since that lovely spring day of 2008.

I was new to the world of blogs, twitter, Facebook, everything Web 2.0 related. Fresh out of fashion journalism reading WomensWearDaily and W, I was now following ReadWriteWeb and TechCrunch, so adding The Coveted to my daily blog reading made me smile so sweetly and look forward to the scoop posted by Jennine or Sonja on vintage clothing, emerging designers, sustainable fashion, beauty tips and my favorite,  the weekly Links a la Mode.

I drool over Jennine’s impeccable flair for unique style and relish in her every day ensembles. Her smarts have grown from creating the Coveted, to then founding Independent Fashion Bloggers, an online community started in 2007, aimed to enlighten other fashion bloggers about monetization, advertising, networks and blog improvemcoveted2ent.  She has taken her readers on a ride of world fashion while giving us a glimpse of her life, her move from San Francisco to Germany, her long hair, her short hair and her flirtation with bangs.   I sometimes forget that I am in Tech and show up to events inspired by what she wears and designers she features.  But, I am after all, a Girl in Tech, and if I show up at an event in my fabulous frocks, the techies shouldn’t be surprised and I know Jennie would be proud (if she knew who I was! ;) )!

We recently expanded our coverage to include all things bubblicious and I’m lucky enough to be the one to share some of my beauty insights with all of you. And don’t worry, I’m qualified and have a pantry of products to prove it.

Anyway, I love that game where you ask people what three things they would take if they were stranded on a deserted island, so today I’m doing that with beauty products. Suspend disbelief for the remainder of this post and imagine you already have necessities like food, water, your iPhone, and hot guys to impress. :)

Sugar by Fresh

Sugar Lip Treatment by Fresh:

I find it hard to justify spending $22.50 on chapstick, so I always keep this one on my wish lists for holidays. The Sugar lip treatment glides on like butter (without the calories) and gives a slight sheen while also protecting your lips with SPF 15. I use it alone or under colored lip gloss.

Eyeshadow Primer Potion by Urban Decay

Eyeshadow Primer Potion by Urban Decay:

Just a swipe of this wand before applying eye makeup and it saves you from the horror that is the mid-day eyeshadow crease. Don’t pretend you don’t know what I’m talking about. At a reasonable price of just $17 this is a must-have for everyday use. (A little goes a long way.) It also comes in a gold shimmer color, but after having tried both, I would stick with the original to avoid looking like Beyonce in Austin Powers. And I realize it doesn’t make much sense to have an eyeshadow primer if I don’t bring any eyeshadow to said island, but that should just tell you awesome it is.

Best of Skintentions Daily Moisturizer by Bliss

Best of Skintentions Daily Moisturizer by Bliss:

I’ve always steered clear of Bliss products since they’re a bit pricey, but Sephora snuck a sample of this moisturizer in my bag recently and now I’m hooked. This light, daily moisturizer has SPF 15, illuminating phytonutrients and is formulated without parabens, sulfates or synthetic dyes. It has a great resume, but really what got me hooked was the smell – very fresh with a hint of citrus. Perfect combo for any deserted island.

Now comment on what your top picks would be, so I’m not missing out on anything!
