Antenna Audio, which provides audio and audio visual tours at museums, historic sites, exhibits, etc. around the world, has launched an iPhone application with the National Gallery in the UK, which is the first ever gallery to make its paintings accessible through a downloadable iPhone application.

Love Art features 250 paintings from the collection along with around 200 minutes of audio and video content – designed to appeal to art enthusiasts and fans of the Gallery, this application is the first of its kind to be released by a major gallery.

Their amusing tag line is This is your collection. Please touch the art. With this application, you can get up close and personal with the art in a way that’s not even possible in a museum. Yep, you can zoom in on a painting. And touch it. So for those of you that have always wanted to reach out and touch a piece of art, now is your chance.

The application allows you to select a theme (love, passion, death, beauty, hope, etc) and view related art with the stories behind each painting provided via audio and video commentary. You can also view paintings based on types, such as cityscapes, portraits, or religious.

This is a fairly innovative, well-designed app. I’m pretty impressed by it. The application is available for free through the iTunes store (iTunes link) for a limited time only.

Since we’re about to embark on a holiday weekend, I thought I’d post something light and pleasant today.

This week, Google announced (and displayed) the winner of their Doodle 4 Google competition. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s a competition where K-12 students compete to reinvent Google’s homepage with their own Google Doodle. Of course, there’s a theme, and this year’s theme was “What I wish for the world.”  That’s sort of a large order, but kids are rarely daunted and they came out with some fantastic drawings.

The national winner was from Christin Engelberth a sixth grader at Bernard Harris Middle School in San Antonio, Texas. She titled her doodle “A New Beginning” to express her wish that “out of the current crisis, discoveries will be found to help the Earth prosper once more.”  Her Google Doodle was displayed on the Google home page all day yesterday.

There were three other national finalists, including two from the Cincinnati area. The four finalists were treated to a trip to New York City and a special event at the Smithsonian’s, Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, where the doodles will be on display through July 5. How cool is that? These four kids are part of their own art exhibit!

As the national winner, Christin received a $15,000 college scholarship, a trip to the Google New York Office, a laptop computer, and a t-shirt printed with her doodle. Her junior high school is also getting a $25,000 technology grant towards the establishment/improvement of a computer lab. The other three finalists weren’t left out in the cold, however. They got everything Christin did, except for the scholarship and the grant. But still – a trip to NYC and a laptop aren’t bad at all!

The other night, I co-hosted the Bi-Coastal Birthday Bash for Julia Allison & Randi Zuckerberg in San Francisco with Sarah Lacy, and Dave Morin. The night was clear, still, warm and intimately lit by the city lights and the moon. I was inspired to take a detour to and from the party to capture a memento of the night.

The Children

I was given a tremendous gift recently, the ability to photograph a very special event that benefited a very special organization.

Relativity Media, LLC CEO, Ryan Kavanaugh and fashion designer Rosetta Millington Getty hosted The Art of Elysium’s 2nd annual black-tie charity gala at the beautiful and historic Vibiana in Los Angeles.

The Art of Elysium is a non-profit organization founded in 1997, that encourages working actors, artists and musicians to dedicate their time and talent to children who are battling serious medical conditions. The organization provides artistic workshops that help children learn and participate in acting, art, comedy, fashion, music, radio, songwriting and creative writing. Vibiana

The occasion served as an event to showcase the multitude of artistic expressions The Art of Elysium shares with hospitalized children on a daily basis.

The visual and conceptual aspects of the theme, “Heaven and Hell,” were created by legendary director, Jim Sheridan (Brothers, My Left Foot, In America), who also received the program’s Visionary award that evening. Following the celebration dinner at Vibrian, guests went followed the hosts to “hell” at the after-party hosted at The Edison.

Eva Mendes received the “Spirit of Elysium” award for her enthusiastic support and active participation in The Art of Elysium’s hospital program over the past two years, as well as her dedication to securing considerable financial support for the program.

Immediately following the impromptu, exclusive photo shoot for Dell’s upcoming Adamo notebook series, I was also introduced to graffiti artist, illustrator and toy designer Tristan Eaton. Dell is featuring Tristan’s unique artistry on several notebook lines and they scream individuality and style without broaching trendiness.

Dell set up a studio to showcase the notebooks as well as Tristan’s creativity. Very cool.

I caught this on TechCrunch this morning, and it seemed worth a mention here. Infectious, which makes vinyl art for your vehicles, is now offering vinyl art for your laptop and iPhone.

I’m a huge fan of Shag’s art. I simply love the idea that I can get his art for my iPhone and laptop. There are a myriad of artists from which you can choose. The artists are paid for their work as well, so no need to feel guilty.

Infectious art is vinyl and, happily, not permanent. Apply a little heat and you can pull it right off without damaging your electronics. iPhone art is $9.99 and laptop pieces, which include a separate artist signature piece, are $29.99.

You know, my iPhone is starting to be a bit boring now that everyone has one. I think it’s time to spice it up.
