With the new media elite creating a think tank/luau in Hawaii, there were still plenty of geek celebs enjoying the CTIA party set or simply gathering on their own at all the popular San Francisco beacons.
I had just wrapped up a meeting with the CEO of a well-known Web 2.0 startup at Bacar in San Francisco’s SOMA district. When I stood up to leave, I literally bumped into Kevin Werbach of Supernova fame among many other things.
I said, “Hey, what a pleasant surprise.”
Werbach replied, “I’m in town and thought I’d connect with a few friends who were also in town.”
As we shook hands, I looked to see who else was around the table, and low and behold, it was a bona fide, albeit, impromptu, Geek Celeb Drinkup.

Indeed, it appeared as if almost everyone around the table was visiting from some other part of the U.S. and Europe.
The first person to stand up and say hello was long time link love, commenting, and referral friend (and brilliant cartoonist) Hugh MacLeod of Gaping Void. After all this time, we finally met in person.

To his left was someone who I had been working with for the last month, but not yet met face-to-face. Tim Ferriss, author of best seller The Four Hour Work Week, was in fresh from a month-long worldwide tour. We have been working together on promoting his LitLiberation project, which has only one week to go…so go donate!

The next thing I knew, more great people were strolling in.
Good friend Deb Schultz is always just a blast see. I am after all, one of her biggest fans.

As I was catching up with Debs about all things Social Media, none other than Loic Le Muer joined the conversation. Loic recently relocated from France (celebrated as one of France’s most popular bloggers and tech entrepreneurs) to pursue his new latest startup, Seesmic. Described as the Twitter of video, Seesmic is currently one of the hottest private beta invites to get. Hey Loic, I’m still waiting

During the evening, we were treated to a series of Hugh MacLeod originals.

At the end of the experience, I stopped to appreciate the fact that right now, these are the “good ole times” in the new Web economy. It’s still not a bubble (although things are bub.blicio.us). It’s still not polluted with plastic people peddling snakeoil and over valuated IPOs or the artificial lemmings attracted to money.

Times are still pure and people are still people.
When you think about it, almost everyone n the scene these days is really doing something fascinating and in many cases, doing something, that in some way is pushing things forward.
Oren Michels and Hugh MacLeod are hosting a geek dinner October 30th in San Francisco at the popular Osha Restaurant. See Hugh’s blog for the details.
