Pownce Opens to the Public, Throws a Party to Celebrate

No more responding to daily inbound requests for invitations…Pownce has officially opened to the public.

Pownce was founded by Leah Culver and Digg’s Kevin Rose and Daniel Burka. The blogosphere and tech set have struggled to define the company and its market position, comparing it mostly to Twitter, with a touch of evite, a hint of Jaiku, and splash of YouSendIt.

It’s thrived quite well in private beta growing to an impressive, all organic 150,000 users.

New features include an an improved desktop client built on Adobe Air, which allows users to respond directly to their friends without having to go to the Website to do so.

Culver and company are smart and one of Pownce’s other new features will help help solidify the company’s growth curve to quite some time. Now, Powncers can import friend lists from Digg, Flickr, Twitter or Facebook, making it easy to connect with them all in one place.

Since Pownce is aiming to be a hub for social interaction, events have been a primary source for sharing and discovering what’s going on around you. Events are now spotlighted on their own page which shows a person’s events, as well as events from friends and the general public. Most importantly, events can be ported seamlessly to Google Calendar or any application supporting the iCal format.

For all new users, although this isn’t a new feature, a noteworthy feature is the ability to share files. Regular, “free,” Powncers can share files up to 10MB, however if you go Pro, you can send up to 100MB files each time.

As the headline states, Pownce also threw a party in San Francisco to celebrate the launch while everyone was in town for Macworld.

It’s the first party I actually had to stand in line for…but it was worth it. I’ll let the pictures tell the story.

Does this mean that this will change everyone’s other go to destination sites like Upcoming.org and Involver? The key to wide use is simplicity in the long term.
