I was invited to the official launch party for MySpace’s new developer platform on 2/5/08. As usual, the news broke early…and I’ve been pushed to finalize my story ahead of the embargo time.
No worries. That’s how we roll.
Basically, since Facebook introduced the F8 platform, MySpace figured it need to keep up by allowing third-party development for its platform – kinda odd for one of the highest performing consumer Web sites in the world dontcha think?. Based on Google’s OpenSocial, MySpace’s third party apps will be built on standard JavaScript and html.
Developers have one month to start building and testing their applications before it’s opened up to consumers in March. This is geared towards providing all developers equal footing for the new platform. Rumor also has it that MySpace is taking a seat at the DataPortability roundtable.
Developers can make money by placing advertisements or selling services on the application’s preferences page.
