Hey, hey party people. It’s your LA correspondent here. Man, time has sure flown since my first post about what’s going down in LA. I’ve got a number of re-caps and upcoming events to share with you but want to focus on letting you in on a little thing called Twiistup. Well, little isn’t really the right word considering that several hundred people attended Twiistup 2 this past August. What’s Twiistup, you ask? Twiistup is a quarterly showcase of the best and brightest tech talent in Southern California. The goal is to allow start-ups (called Showoffs) to showcase their ideas while creating a friendly atmosphere where guests can drink network with fellow innovators, investors, job seekers and established industry leaders.
True to the name, Twiistup is indeed a twist on the standard tech showcase gathering. Events are held at a club (Air Conditioned in Venice,) have a DJ, appetizers, drinks, gifts bags and giveaways. I attended TU2 this past August. It was one of my first networking events down here and I was impressed with the unique blend of networking and company demos in a nightclub atmosphere. The event ran from seven to midnight. My feet were killing me (damn heels) and my voice was hoarse by the time I left. All signs of a good time my friends!
Why, oh why, have I told you all this? Because organization for Twiistup 3, happening January 16th in Venice, is currently under way and they just announced a call for proposals to be a Showoff. Only nine lucky companies will be selected.
The theme is “New Year’s Resolutions,” and they’re searching for (preferably) under-the-radar type companies that have products or services for each of the following topics:
1. Spend More Time with Family & Friends
2. Fitness
3. Quit Smoking
4. Enjoy Life More
5. Get Out of Debt
6. Learn Something New
7. Help Others
8. Get Organized
9. Dating
Know a start-up that’s addressing one of those topics? Then point them to the Twiistup site to read the details and submit. Proposals are due by November 16th with acceptance notifications going out November 30th.
Having seen it first hand, and knowing companies that have participated, I can tell you it’s an excellent exposure opportunity and a lot of fun.
So, what are you waiting for? Pitch your So Cal companies! Tell your friends! Help spread the word! Can you tell I’m excited? Maybe it has something to do with Bub.blicio.us being a media sponsor or maybe it’s because here’s yet another example of LA making it happen. Cheers!

Thanks for the post Nicole. Twiistup showoffs have gone on to recent greatness – winner of Techcrunch 40 (Mint) and our featured guest from Twiistup 1 just signed on to direct the remakes of Tron and Logan’s Run (Joe Kosinski). Showing off @ Twiistup gets you in front of a few hundred potential business partners and promoters. It’s a great way for guests to get to know your site.
