I’m fascinated by Techmeme and the art and passionate pursuit of making the top of the page by writers and bloggers alike.

To me, Techmeme is a looking glass into important conversations that are documenting and defining new tech, amplifying voices of pros and enthusiasts in a unique way that gives each an “almost” equal audience.

Regardless of whether or not you argue that it’s an echo chamber, try analyzing it from a non “silicon valley” or “web 2.0″ perspective.

For example, do you want instant insight into the world of entertainment? What’s the hottest story that everyone is talking about right now? Where do you go to find out? TMZ.com or Perez Hilton? Probably.

But, if you check out Gabe Rivera’s other site, WeSmirch.com, it’s basically Techmeme but for entertainment news and gossip, and within minutes, you’ll be up to speed on all the news.
At the very least, Rivera’s formula for tracking and showcasing conversations gives you a clear view into the hot topics at any given moment.

Amit Agarwal has run a very interesting experiment where he shot 50 hours of time-lapsed video that documents the global tech conversations that made the top of Techmeme. It’s edited down into a fascinating 50 seconds.

It’s almost mind-numbing to watch the injection of new memes and the expansion and evolution of top threads before they’re replaced by the next story.

Well done Amit. And, keep up the great work Gabe!
