I think it’s great that there’s a built-in energy saving feature that puts my Mac to sleep after a preset number of inactive minutes. But sometimes you’re not really inactive. You might be explaining a slide while giving a presentation, or maybe you’re contentedly watching online video out at Hulu. Either way, you don’t really want your screen to go dark in the middle.

Caffeine for Your Mac

Yes, you can change the setting in System Preferences, but then you need to remember to change it back. Instead, just feed your Mac a little Caffeine. Caffeine is a tiny little app by Lighthead software that keeps your Mac awake. A coffee cup displays in your menu bar. Click it and the icon changes to a full cup, which keeps your Mac awake. Click it again to put your Mac back into your pre-set, energy saving settings. It’s that simple.

I’ve found Caffeine to be invaluable. As a bonus, Caffeine is also free. Don’t let your Mac fall asleep.
