TechCrunch's 7th Annual Summer Party at August CapitalAs is appropriate for the summertime, there needs to be one giant party where people can simply gather to talk about whatever they want and have a great time. Here in Silicon Valley, that one party has been going on for the past seven years and happened just this past Friday. Held at the always-impressive offices of venture capital firm, August Capital, thanks to the gracious generosity of investor David Hornik, TechCrunch’s annual summer party went off spectacularly and in style.

I’ve been fortunate to attend this August Capital party over the past few years and I must say that each year gets better and better. Recently, over the past 3-4 years, TechCrunch has coincided this event with their mini-conference, the CrunchUp. As I mentioned in a previous post, the CrunchUp usually ties into a specific theme that has taken center stage in the industry–this year happened to focus on Facebook’s platform. So most people would go to the CrunchUp and then drive over to August Capital’s offices on legendary Sand Hill Road for a chance to unwind and have casual conversations with their friends, members from TechCrunch, and meet some new people. And every year the venue is packed!

UberpaloozaFor those of us who have ridden in an Uber vehicle, it’s probably common knowledge that it can be a real party sometimes. I can recall times when I’ve requested an Uber town car to come pick me up only to be pleasantly surprised with an SUV coming by. And not an ordinary black SUV, but rather one with champagne glasses inside with privacy screens, reading lights, and a lot of fixtures that make you want to scream out “P-I-M-P”.

Well Uber has been known to surprise and be really great, so why wouldn’t they roll out a new program for one of the hottest concert tickets of the year: Lollapalooza. This Friday marks the start of this three-day concert event in Grant Park located in Chicago, IL. Over the course of the three days, there’s going to be a lot of people moving in and out of the area and you can be sure that public transit and taxi cabs are going to be booked up. But if you’re smart enough, you might just say “forget the cabs” and instead go after getting to and from in style…all in an Uber. C’mon, after an event-filled day with 8 stages, 150 bands, and dealing with over 300,000 party animals like yourself, the last thing you’re going to want to think about is just how are you going to get around. Let Uber take care of that for you…and they’re going to make it a bit more enticing too.

THRIVEgulu Launch PartyEveryone knows that every once in a while, Silicon Valley has the pleasure of hosting visits by some of Hollywood’s brightest actors, actresses, and celebrities. Let’s face it, with the popularity of Facebook, Google, Twitter, and YouTube, famous individuals are always stopping by to learn the latest and greatest in technology to promote their products, themselves, or their causes. Case in point: last Thursday, several well-known individuals stopped by the Bay Area to announce the launch of a non-profit charity called THRIVEGulu. You can read about this charity in my last blog post, but suffice it to say, the launch event was definitely one where you could see the convergence of celebrity and the tech world in an evening of fun, education, and inspiration.

The festivities began around 6pm in downtown San Francisco at Roe Nightclub where fans gathered outside waiting for their chance to meet two famous individuals who have had a lasting impact on the science-fiction genre over the past few years: Eliza Dushku and Joss Whedon. Lines were out the door with people for this quick meet & greet. But soon, the real entertainment began in the upstairs in a much more intimate and private gathering hosted by the two celebrities and one of the tech industry’s most prominent individuals, Ben Parr, former Editor-at-Large at Mashable and founder of The Peep Project. This gathering attracted a bevy of who’s who from the industry to have a great evening learning about THRIVEGulu and donating their wallets to benefit a worthwhile African charity.
