Nope that’s not a typo C-Span is getting involved in social media. C-Span is going to be creating Democrat and Republican “hubs” that are going to be the social media portals for users. C-Span is going to be providing exclusive video content that users will then be able to embed in on their sites. C-Span is working with web 2.0 marketing firm NMS (new media strategies) and creative agency JESS3 to make all of this happen. According to Pete Snyder, the Founder and CEO of NMS:
“This effort is further evidence that new media technologies are changing how traditional media covers of news – and showcases the profound ways in which social media is transforming politics and democracy”
I think this is actually pretty exciting. It’s great to see a traditional political news medium embrace social media technologies to help get more people involved. News is becoming more of a collective resource as opposed to a one-sided “push” medium and I think C-Span has a lot of potential for engaging it’s users.
Susan Swain the Co-President from C-Span had this to say:
“For nearly 30 years, C-SPAN has given voice to the opinions of the American public through its televised call-in programs. In 2008, Convention Hub allows C-PAN to become a central point for the political opinions of the online community.”
The launch is set for later this month here at the C-Span Politics page.
The convention hubs for Republicans and Democrats are not live yet but they will be later this month.
What do you think of C-Span’s latest push into social media?
Thanks for reading

Jacob and Brian — thanks so much for the coverage. Working with C-SPAN on this has been one of the most amazing projects in my professional career… and we have only just begun! Having the positive reinforcement from the social media community will mean a lot and also send a broader signal to other organizations to do the same.
This is one of my favorite lines — and one with which I could not agree more — “News is becoming more of a collective resource as opposed to a one-sided ‘push.’”
Let us know if you are covering the conventions at all and we will be sure to link-ya. And on Twitter, make sure to use the hashtags #RNC08 and #DNC08.
Thanks again guys
