Brace yourselves Charlotte…the world is coming to you this week in honor of the 2012 Democratic National Convention. Election season is in full swing and the Republicans have already nominated their choices: former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan accepted the nominations just last week at the Republican National Convention. And it was definitely a rather interesting convention…perhaps one of the strangest thing that could have emerged from there was when renowned and celebrated actor and director Clint Eastwood took the stage to introduce the Republican nominee and addressed an empty chair with an imaginary figure befitting President Obama. That itself wound up creating a brand new meme called #Eastwooding, and even got Obama involved in the whole thing. So now that the Republicans have had their say, this coming week is the Democrat’s turn and people must wonder what will take place–just how will the Democrats one-up the GOP?
Well, if social media has their way, the Democrats could potentially have a megastar walking into Charlotte and the Bank of America stadium where 70,000 will witness the president accept his party’s nomination. Just who could potentially overshadow the leader of the free world? Why, the Golden Girl herself: Betty White. A petition is already circulating on Change.org in order to garner enough signatures that the Democratic National Committee will see it and follow through on the request.
Started by Peter Slutsky, this petition was spurred on following Mr. Eastwood’s speech at the RNC and apparently Mr. Slutsky felt that the performance gave older American’s a bad name with Mr. Eastwood’s “absurd and awkward-to-watch” introduction of Gov. Romney. Currently the petition has nearly 2,500 signatures and even a Facebook page has been created, with over 19,000 likes so far. But if she does get invited, it will be a welcome invitation. After all, Mrs. White has publicly endorsed President Obama’s re-election campaign, saying that she likes what the president has done and “how he represents us.”
This isn’t the first time that Mrs. White has been supported and petitioned virtually. After all, it was only a couple of years ago when Facebook got behind a movement to get her to host Saturday Night Live–which she immediately acknowledged during her opening monologue. That performance got her an Emmy nomination for her hosting abilities. That “petition” garnered over 500,000 fans who led the way, cheered and begged for the acclaimed actress to appear.
It’s quite amazing to see how much time Mrs. White actually has, in light of the work she has with Hot in Cleveland, Off Their Rockers, her appearance in movies, and countless other activities. No word on whether she’s accept the opportunity to speak at the convention if asked, but if she does, I’m sure it’ll be a rousing success with a bunch of great and quick one-liners. And it will be an interesting move on the part of the DNC to match wits with the RNC over this prestigious honor–who would do a better job? Eastwood or White? Which do you find believable in their message and who do you think would convince you to vote for their guy?
We’ll find out on Thursday.
