February 2009

by Brian Solis

Dave Morin, Sarah Lacy, and I co-hosted the West Coast leg of Julia & Randi’s Bi-Coastal Birthday Bash last night at Rosewood in San Francisco.

Julia & Randi are celebrating their birthdays with us on both coasts this weekend, San Francisco (Fri, Feb 27) and New York City (Sat, Feb 28) in an effort to raise awareness and donations for Charity: Water and Women for Women International. The theme honored the charities by promoting the colors that uniquely represented them, blue and pink. It created a wonderful ambiance of continuously shifting fashionable decor, which complemented the intimate mood set by the Rosewood’s stylish motif.

Julia and Randi, you are amazing and wonderful. I can’t express that enough. Thank you for always being there…And, thank you for sharing your special day with us and also for raising awareness of two very important causes. Happy Birthday!

I’ll let the pictures tell the rest of the story…

More about Charity: Water

Charity: Water is a non-profit bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Right now, over 1 billion people on the planet don’t have access to safe, clean drinking water. Charity: water funds sustainable clean water solutions in areas of greatest need. Just $20 can give one person in a developing nation clean water for 20 years.

Gary V’s new venture: Obsessed TV

by Michelle Lentz on February 27, 2009

by Michelle Lentz

I often feel like Google and Facebook are battling to take over the world while Gary Vaynerchuk is slowly and steadily trying to take over anything related to a video camera.

You may know Gary from his various appearances on the Today Show or Conan O’Brien. Maybe you know him from Wine Library TV or his marketing site. Maybe, like me, you’ve heard one of his fired-up and exciting keynotes. Whatever it is, Gary is all over and he’s just extended himself a little further.

Gary now owns 50% of new venture / production company Obsessed TV with Samantha Ettus. From what I can tell, Samantha is sort of an expert on experts. She knows all the right people and knows where to find them and what information they can offer. Sort of makes her the perfect talk show host.

Obsessed TV is the traditional interview-a-star talk show format created for the Web. Their goal is to “entertain and enlighten while revealing the personalities behind its exceptional interviewees.”

While you might have seen Dylan Lauren gracing the cover of your favorite magazine, only on Obsessed can you gain meaningful insight into the passions and struggles of the hard working entrepreneur. While you may be aware of Lillian Vernon’s catalogue, only on Obsessed will you really meet the woman behind the brand and hear her powerful story. While you may have heard Peter Greenberg talk about travel deals on the Today Show, only on Obsessed will you find out how he met the love of his life and the path he traveled to get where he is. Every morning show in America trots out experts to tell us about their latest books and accomplishments. But only Obsessed strips away the facade and brings the people behind the names to life.’

The main host and star will be Samantha. At the end of each episode, Gary will steal the show with a 3-minute segment on wine. Samantha and Gary are targeting Obsessed TV at “the Oprah set” – women between 25 and 55. Below I’ve embedded a 25-min-ish clip of an interview with food writer Mark Bittman.

How Are People Tweeting?

by Brian Solis on February 27, 2009

by Brian Solis via PR 2.0

Source

HubSpot released the latest market data that reveals which tools and services people are flocking to when communicating on Twitter.

According to the research, most people interact on Twitter using Twitter.com from their browser of choice – almost half of all users in fact. Note to hubspot, would love to see that data broken out by browser.

Second, and it’s a distant second, people are interacting on Twitter using downloaded or web-based desktop apps, which provide additional functionality beyond the basic services provided on Twitter.com. Interestingly, mobile shows a strong placement in third, just behind desktop. As mobile applications on the iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, and Palm evolve, this number will continue to swell as they rival their desktop counterparts.

Twitter Interface Type – Percentage

Web – 48.1%
Desktop – 21.8%
Mobile – 17.9%
Aggregation / Automation – 11.7%
Pictures – 0.5%

HubSpot also reviewed the top applications in the Twitterverse. No surprise, the Web continues as the dominant source for Tweets, again representing almost half of all usage. What is surprising however, is the chasm of market share between the Web and the top Twitter apps. TwitterFeed and TweetDeck follow in a distant second and third place at 9.2% and 7.3% respectively. HubSpot found that a collective of over 600 apps combine for a total of 14.5%. I would love to see the list of those apps independt of this study.

Top Twitter Interfaces Percentage

Web – 46.5%
twitterfeed – 9.2%
TweetDeck – 7.3%
txt – 4.6%
twitterrific – 4.3%
twhirl – 4.0%
TwitterFox – 4.0%
Tween – 2.0%
TwitterBerry – 1.9%
TwitterFon – 1.8%
Over 600 Others – 14.5%

How to Save, Earn, and Hustle in Economic HELL

by Marissa Louie on February 27, 2009

YOU WILL Survive this Economic HELL.

marilyn-monroe-iconic

Here are my personal tips on how to save, earn, and hustle your way from 2009 to  Economic HEAVEN.

Let’s hog some sunlight and start the money photosynthesis process, shall we?

–SAVE–

1) Renegotiate your contracts.

Including RENT: It’s prime time to have “the talk” with your landlord. Check @CraigNewmark’s craigslist.org for market rates.

Also renegotiate: your office lease, co-working space, office phone system, equipment leases, Internet, your significant other (haha), etc.

2) Do the DIY

Cut the middle 25% fat from your staff, onshore instead of offshore (hellooo unemployed friends), do your own emails. Hire triple threats like your COO with a J.D. and CFA, your programmers who are certified MySQL DBAs with PR experience, etc.

–EARN–

1) Unemployment Checks are like Welfare Checks

Unemployment checks are not an option. They’re like welfare checks. Be the predator, not the prey: learn transferrable skills in an unglamorous sector, work part-time for a startup, or become CEO.

2) Pull in the CASH

Before you start selling yourself on the street, start earning some money. Preferrably on something you probably already have: website traffic. At the very least, put some cash-generating ads on your website or blog. Call or text me at (510) 375-1941 for the unofficial Ad Revenue Hotline :->

3) Forget the ABCs. Know your PQRS

Profit, Quantifiability, ROI, Sales.

*Profit=Revenue-Costs

After you get your company to breakeven, go for the money shot: PROFIT.

*Quantifiability: Measure and adjust. Measure and adjust.

*ROI: You must require a high return on your time, energy, and mental space. High-impact in business; high-impact friends too.

*Sales: Parrots squawk, but money talks.

Take action and responsibility for turning your company’s bottom line from RED to GREEN.

Whether Analyst or Engineer, be the “Acting Managing Partner” and drive sales. Your company will be crying tears of monetary joy.

–HUSTLE–

1) Never Eat Lunch Alone (NELA). Even your lunch can be viral. Pick up the $5 tab for coffee, lunch, or snack and announce it on Twitter with the hashtag #E2E for Entrepreneur 2 Entrepreneur Tweetup. That’s $5 for potentially $50,000 worth of tactical bliss for your company, or a savings of $12,000 for a job headhunter.

2) 80% (work like a drill sargeant) + 20% (pure happiness) = 100% success

Maniacal work: calendarize your day into 10 or 30 minute segments with defined tasks. Prioritize based on money in/money out. Plow through like a farmer reaping a cash harvest.

Maniacal happiness: Get happy about the stupidest, simplest things. If you attend a party, be at the party. Not glued to your Blokia, CrackBerry, Doogle, or Jesus Phone. Be relentless in cutting out the unhappy people who want you to wallow in their lame misery.

3) Elevator Pitch goes anytime, to anybody who will listen

Friday night: I pitched two VCs from a famous early stage venture firm while partying in their limo and looking like THIS

marissa-mo-and-a-with-kenny-howery-and-luke-nosek-hip-hop-house-party-in-nob-hill

Monday night: Cashier at Jack in the Box asks me what I do, then I ask if she’s any good selling on the phone:

prime-time-pitch-time-jack-in-the-box

4) Hustle the Hustler.

(AKA The Swirly.)

Somebody threaten to sue you for a buck fifty? Counter-lawsuits are my favorite. Nothing beats spending two bucks flushing a loser down the toilet. It’s called “the Swirly” at summer camp (or Foo Camp or Startup Camp) and it’s what happens to those who threaten the Queen Bee.

5) Get MONEY, get PAID.

Money, not fluffy social capital, greases the wheels.
Who cares if you have 60,000 followers on Twitter if you’re not making any $.

Follow your nose and whiff the green. Focus on those parts of your business that generate revenue. Collect and get paid.

Get to Economic HEAVEN.
